Do I need a special screen for an ultra-short-throw projector?

Yes. UST projectors arrive at the screen from a low, oblique angle (0.25:1 throw ratio or lower). Standard matte white fabric scatters this oblique light toward the viewer along with ambient ceiling light, washing out contrast. A Fresnel surface uses concentric optical prisms to redirect the UST beam straight toward the viewer while rejecting ceiling light. Using a standard screen with a UST projector produces poor contrast. Using a Fresnel screen with a standard-throw projector also produces poor results - the match must be correct in both directions.

What is the difference between Fresnel ALR and standard ALR screens for UST projectors?

Standard ALR screens (flat lenticular coatings) are designed for standard-throw projectors arriving from a centred, perpendicular angle. They do not match the extreme oblique angle of a UST projector and will deliver worse contrast than matte white when used with UST. Fresnel screens are specifically engineered for UST geometry - their concentric prism structure matches the low-angle UST beam and rejects ceiling light effectively. Always match screen type to projector throw type.

Can I use a regular projector screen with a UST projector?

You can, but the result will be disappointing. A matte white screen with a UST projector will show significantly reduced contrast because the oblique beam angle bounces ambient ceiling light directly toward the viewer. A standard ALR screen will perform even worse because its rejection pattern is calibrated for a different beam geometry. A Fresnel or purpose-built UST screen is required for acceptable contrast performance with a UST laser projector.

Ultra-short-throw (UST) projector screens are engineered for laser TVs and UST projectors that sit just 10–30 cm from the screen. At that shallow projection angle, the beam arrives from near floor level — meaning conventional matte white or standard ALR screens produce severe hotspots, banding, and gain roll-off at the screen edges. Only purpose-built lenticular or Fresnel optics can handle UST geometry correctly.
