UST Projector Screens — Does Your Projector Need a Special Screen?

If you own a UST projector — a Hisense laser TV, Samsung The Premiere, LG HU85, or any ultra short throw model — you need a UST-specific screen. Why UST Projectors Need Special Screens

A standard long-throw projector sits several metres from the screen and projects at a nearly perpendicular angle — light hits the screen surface head-on. Standard matte white and ALR screens are optimised for this geometry.

A UST projector sits 10–25 cm from the screen and projects at a steep upward angle — roughly 60–80 degrees from horizontal. The light hits the screen surface at a radically different geometry. Standard screens can't handle this: the angle creates severe hotspots where reflected light concentrates near the bottom of the image and falls off toward the top, producing an image that's dramatically brighter at the bottom than the top.

How UST Screens Work

UST screens use one of two optical technologies to handle steep projection angles:

Fresnel Optics (Flat Fresnel ALR)

A Fresnel screen uses concentric rings of prismatic micro-structures embedded in the screen surface. Each ring is angled to redirect light arriving from below (your UST projector) straight back toward the audience, while simultaneously absorbing light arriving from above (ceiling lights and ambient sources).

Fresnel screens provide excellent ambient light rejection and are suitable for most UST projectors with gain between 0.6–1.0.

Lenticular / CLR Optics

A lenticular screen uses horizontal micro-lens ridges that accept light from the extreme angle of a UST projector and focus it toward the audience. CLR (Ceiling Light Rejecting) screens add an additional layer that specifically absorbs downward ambient light from ceiling fixtures.

Lenticular CLR screens deliver higher gain (0.6–1.2) and better viewing angles than Fresnel screens, making them suitable for larger rooms with more off-axis seating.

Standard Projector Screen vs UST Screen — Can I Just Use What I Have?
