Best Projector Screen for LG CineBeam HU85LS — UST Setup Guide

The LG CineBeam HU85LS and its siblings (HU915QE, HU85LA) are ultra-short throw laser projectors that sit inches from the wall and project a 4K image upward onto the screen. Pairing them with the wrong screen is the single most common — and most expensive — mistake buyers make.

Standard matte white screens are designed for light that arrives from a conventional throw distance (1–3 metres away). A UST projector fires light at an extreme upward angle from just 15–25 cm away. On a standard screen that light scatters everywhere, producing a dim, low-contrast image regardless of how well you've calibrated the projector. You need a screen engineered specifically for this angle.

What Makes a UST Screen Different

UST-compatible screens use one of two optical structures:

  • Fresnel lens layer — a series of microscopic concentric ridges that capture the steep upward light from the projector and direct it toward viewers, while rejecting overhead ambient light from ceiling fixtures. Delivers exceptional contrast even with lights on.
  • Nano-particle ALR coating — a softer, less directional approach. Wider viewing angle than Fresnel but slightly less ambient-light rejection. Better for rooms where people watch from widely varied positions.

Best TrueThrow Screens for the LG CineBeam HU85LS

TrueThrow Fresnel ALR UST Screen — Best overall

Gain 1.4, 130° viewing angle. The Fresnel structure delivers the sharpest contrast of any TrueThrow UST screen — ideal for living rooms with natural light. At 1.4 gain the image is noticeably brighter than competing Fresnel screens at 0.6 gain, meaning you can run the LG CineBeam at lower brightness settings and extend laser life. Available 80"–120".

TrueThrow CBSP Carbon Black UST Screen — Best for cinema rooms

Gain 0.6, 160° viewing angle. The carbon-black nano-particle surface prioritises deep blacks and wide-angle uniformity over peak brightness. If your room has good light control (blackout blinds or a dedicated theater room), this screen produces the most cinematic result — visibly better black levels than any Fresnel screen at the same lumen output.

TrueThrow HBSP Premium UST Screen — Balanced pick

Gain 0.72, 160° viewing angle. A nano-particle ALR surface with slightly higher gain than the CBSP. A natural choice if you want wide-angle flexibility without the hard directionality of a Fresnel screen — good for open-plan spaces where viewers sit at varying angles to the screen.

TrueThrow HBSI Motorized Floor-Rising UST Screen — Best for living rooms

Gain 0.8, 160° viewing angle. This screen disappears into a low-profile cabinet when not in use — the cleanest solution for living rooms where you don't want a permanent screen. Built specifically for UST laser projectors.

What Size Screen for the LG CineBeam HU85LS?

At a 0.19:1 throw ratio, the HU85LS needs approximately 1.9 cm of throw distance per 10 cm of screen width. Practically:

  • 92" screen (~204 cm wide) → ~19 cm from screen base to projector lens
  • 100" screen (~221 cm wide) → ~21 cm from screen base
  • 110" screen (~244 cm wide) → ~23 cm from screen base
  • 120" screen (~266 cm wide) → ~25 cm from screen base

Most buyers with a credenza or TV stand choose 100"–110". If the projector sits on the floor (no furniture), 120" becomes practical.

Setup Tips

  • Mount the screen first, then position the projector — not the other way around.
  • The bottom edge of the screen should sit roughly at the same height as the top of the projector housing.
  • Keep the projector level — even a 1° tilt creates keystone distortion that digital correction cannot fully compensate for.
  • Use the LG CineBeam's Auto Brightness Optimizer sparingly — in a dark room, lower the brightness manually to extend laser life and improve black depth.
